Can I connect an XLR mic to the ATEM Mini series?

Question

Can I connect an XLR mic to the ATEM Mini series?

Answer

Requires conversion, but connection is possible.
Direct connection is not possible as the ATEM Mini series does not have an XLR connector on its own.
Therefore, when inputting a microphone to ATEM Mini, it is necessary to convert it to the 3.5mm stereo terminal of "MIC1" and "MIC2", or to HDMI.

Depending on the operation, there is also a method to separately record the microphone input with a PC or recorder without using ATEM Mini. In that case, ATEM Mini cannot batch process the audio, so it is recommended that ATEM Mini be able to batch process it.

When inputting from the 3.5mm stereo terminal

What you need depends on whether the XLR mic you're connecting needs phantom power.

When phantom power supply is not required

Compatible only with a conversion cable.
You will need to purchase a conversion cable that converts from XLR female, but since the ATEM Mini has a stereo terminal, it is desirable to use a cable that converts from XLR female to 3.5mm stereo.

There are two XLR terminals, but if you use a single microphone, connect one of them to the XLR terminal.

Since the ATEM Mini has a stereo connector, you may not get good results if you use a conversion cable that converts to mono.
For this reason, we recommend connecting to ATEM Mini as a stereo mic using either left or right. By making the XLR mic and the audio from the connected side available in both LR inside the ATEM Mini, it can be treated as mono. Specifically, we will use the audio splitting function that splits the stereo audio input to the ATEM Mini into two mono channels.

When phantom power supply is required

An environment in which phantom power can be supplied to the XLR microphone is required.

  • through phantom power

Connect phantom power and connect to ATEM Mini using the cable described in "If you don't need phantom power".

  • Route through an audio interface with phantom power

Connect an XLR mic to your phantom powered audio interface and connect to ATEM Mini via 3.5mm stereo.

When inputting via HDMI

This is possible by enabling the XLR microphone to be used as the audio for the HDMI video.

A common practice is to connect an XLR mic to a camera that accepts an XLR compatible mic, then connect that camera to the ATEM Mini via HDMI.
