Is optimized media made from original non-proxy media clips even if they use proxy media?

Question

Is optimized media made from original non-proxy media clips even if they use proxy media? I would like to know if there is any possibility of degradation on the timeline when using proxy media created from other systems such as cameras.

Answer

Optimized media always references the original material.
Therefore, the quality of optimized media will be the same as without proxy media.
However, proxy media is an upward compatible function of optimized media, and it is easy to manage the storage location, so we recommend using proxy media.
However, if proxy files created outside of DaVinci Resolve, such as cameras, are used as proxy media, it may be easier to create proxy media with DaVinci Resolve based on the original data. It depends on the machine specs and format of the proxy media created by an external device such as a camera.

The quality of the optimized media is determined by "Optimized Media Resolution" and "Optimized Media Format" in "Optimized Media & Render Cache" in "Project Settings".
