Intelligent path mapping to automatically relink files

DaVinci Resolve 18 has the ability to automatically map and manage paths between users and machines using a cloud-based project library. This feature is enabled by default in your project settings.

Once the first user adds media to the project, additional users or machines simply need to relink to the shared copy of the media. DaVinci Resolve automatically maps these paths so no one else takes your media offline.

You can also manually manage shared locations between users and machines. To do this, the first user adds a shared media location to the project settings. This can be a shared cloud folder using services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Additional users can relink the footage or open the project settings and set a local path to that media location.

New proxy generator app to auto create proxies in watch folder

DaVinci Resolve 18 includes a new Proxy Generator app.

A Proxy Generator can be assigned one or more watchfolders. The Proxy Generator app scans for QuickTime proxies for selected codecs and automatically generates them in the Proxy subfolder.

When importing media into DaVinci Resolve, proxies found in these subfolders will be automatically linked and assigned as media pool proxies. This also happens if proxies are generated after importing media into the media pool.

Improved proxy handling

DaVinci Resolve 18 gives you the option to prioritize proxies or camera originals. The selected clip type takes precedence if both proxy and original are available due to the setting selected in the Playback menu.

Resolve FX Depth Map for depth keying and grading

Resolve FX Depth Map uses the DaVinci Neural Engine to generate a depth alpha channel that can be used to create background isolation, object isolation at specific depths, fog, portrait mode, and other distance effects.

From the Effects Library on the Color page, you can apply a Depth Map to a node, enable the Depth Map preview to view the results, adjust limits, isolate specific depths, and refine results.

You can also disable preview, enable OFX alpha, and use alpha output in subsequent nodes.

Resolve FX Surface Tracker for tracking distorted surfaces

DaVinci Resolve Studio's new Resolve FX Surface Tracker applies textures and effects to flexible, deformable moving surfaces. If the texture you want to apply has transparency, you should drag the plugin as an FX node instead of applying it with a collector node.

  • The bounds tab selects/creates the area to apply the texture. Complex surfaces can be defined by adding bounces and holes.
  • The mesh tab allows you to set the mesh for the surface you want to track. This serves as a starting point for tracking.
  • The track tab is where the analysis takes place. You can adjust the movable range of fast-moving objects and the stiffness of the mesh.
  • The Results tab allows you to control how the warped surface is used for warping and compositing content.

Improved Resolve FX Beauty with new Ultra Beauty mode

Ultra Beauty mode, now the default setting for Resolve FX Beauty, allows for stronger filtering and a more natural finish. This stronger effect is also useful for smoothing object surfaces and some compression artifacts.

Convert Fixed Bus Project to FlexBus

Old fixed bus projects can be converted to FlexBus projects by unchecking Use fixed bus mapping controls in Fairlight's project settings.

This operation permanently converts the project timeline to FlexBus and cannot be undone.

Ordering of tracks and buses from track index

You can now drag and drop tracks and buses and freely change their order using the track index. This order is reflected in the Meter, Mixer and Fader panels.

You can choose between a scrollable single view or a split view with fixed sections indicated by adjustable split points.

Set meter decay, peak hold and display mode

Fairlight meters now have a digital VU mode that combines VU and peak levels in FlexBus projects.

From 'Fairlight' in the project settings you can choose IEC 60268-18, digital VUs or define your own custom levels, scales and decays.

Improved plugin management in mixer

Pan, EQ, dynamics, and third-party plug-in settings can now be copied between tracks and buses in the mixer.

It can be called in multiple ways.

  • It can be invoked from the plug-in dialog's context menu, or from the mixer's pan, EQ and dynamics graphs.
  • Hotkeys Shift+Control+C & Shift+Control+V (Shift+Command on Mac OS).
  • All channel settings are now available in the mixer strip header context menu

Improved Python 3 support

The auto-detection of installed Python versions for scripts has been updated to check for default installations of Python 3.3 to 3.10 (and future versions).

If set, the environment variable PYTHONHOME (or explicitly if both PYTHON3HOME and PYTHON2HOME are installed) will be taken into account. To explicitly override the version used by DaVinci Resolve and Fusion Studio, set FUSION_Python3_Home (formerly FUSION_Python36_Home) to point to the base folder.

Expression animated Custom Poly modifiers

You can now quickly create and animate Fusion masks and strokes with custom poly modifiers.

In addition to common expressions, custom poly supports the following functions and variables.

  • (px,py) is the current point in the source poly.
  • (px,py) is the current point on the source poly.
  • index and num are the current point index (0-based) and the total number of points.
  • getx(disp), gety(disp) are for accessing the polyline value from a given displacement.
    • getx_at(disp,time), gety_at(disp,time) specify displacement and time.
    • Use variations of get2, get3 for additional inputs.
  • get[rgba]bdwm is used to access the image channel with the black/duplicate/wrap/mirror result.

Support for Windows and Linux 10bit viewers in Studio

In General Preferences, DaVinci Resolve Studio now allows 10-bit precision to be enabled for Windows and Linux viewers. Requires a high performance Nvidia or AMD graphics card, latest drivers and a 10-bit capable display.

Stream video output to remote monitoring in Windows and Linux Studio

DaVinci Resolve Studio now supports the ability to stream video monitoring output to remote Blackmagic Design video monitoring devices. This requires:

  • Windows and Linux Studio systems with Nvidia graphics cards.
  • A remote studio client with Blackmagic Design monitoring devices.
  • Windows and Linux clients require an Nvidia graphics card.

Streaming servers can allow remote streaming connections in the General of Davinci Resolve Preferences. By default, TCP port 16410 is used for streaming connections.

On the client side, navigate to the DaVinci Resolve folder from the Applications folder on Mac or the Start menu on Windows and run the DaVinci Remote Monitoring application. Set the IP address of the server machine. Configure your DeckLink or UltraStudio card on your client machine and press start.

The streaming server can now accept incoming connection prompts and start streaming monitoring output to remote clients.

Remote streaming now mirrors cut, edit, color and delivery viewers. Streams stereo audio and shows no overlays or scopes on the client side. Mac OS clients are limited to 8-bit 4:2:0 video formats.
